This post reviews lenovo's hardware maintenance diskette version 1.76 or later. Hardware maintenance disks are created to provide a back-up copy of the factory setup configuration of Lenovo ThinkPad systems. Using this setup CD, system administrators can recreate the system configuration quickly and easily in case it becomes necessary to return any ThinkPad computer system to its original state, without the need for time-consuming installation procedures with full image restores from DVDs or CDs. The post goes on to cover removal/replacement of the Thinkpad 230s's air duct fan, the 230s's IEEE 1394 card, and the 110b's floppy disk drive. The post acknowledges that this document is the only official source for information regarding hardware maintenance diskette version 1.76 or later. The notice reads: "Lenovo has decided not to release a formal problem reporting tool for Thinkpad systems" which is unofficially known as TPKG (ThinkPad Knowledge Group). The notice has been found on every ThinkPad laptop manufactured up until 2012, and it can be downloaded from any of the variants' forums on the web. It is not clear why Lenovo decided to do so. The process of manually reporting ThinkPad hardware issues has been described in the thinkwiki article, "How to Suppress Hardware Error Messages". The article suggests disabling ACPI error reporting, before reporting the issue on the forum. The article provides an example regarding how to "suppress" ACPI error messages for a Lenovo Thinkpad T60. Problem reporting for ThinkPads using Windows 7 has also been discussed in another MMIO thinkwiki article, "TPKG: Reporting Problems on Windows 7". Lenovo provides a utility called TPSUM, which can be used to calculate TPKG usage statistics on Lenovo laptops. The utility was only released in February 2011, so it's not clear why Lenovo has decided to do so. The following is a list of newly released ThinkPad models that have TPKG utility built-in, which may help users to get help more quickly when experiencing ThinkPad hardware issues. Models are listed in their order of appearance at the vendor's web site. It's not clear why Lenovo has decided to release this document for some models, while not releasing it for others. For the most laptops, the most updated BIOS version is provided by Lenovo's support site, and it can be updated by downloading a executable file from the support site. The post is a little bit confusing, as the regular way to update a ThinkPad's BIOS is to download an executable image from support.lenovo.com, discarding the .iso file. The process of cleaning a Lenovo Thinkpad laptop from dust has been described in numerous blogs. The post goes on to describe how to clean the following Thinkpads: T60p, R52, T43p and T61. eccc085e13
